Vitamin D hat vielfältige Funktionen im Körper. Eine optimale Vitamin-D-Versorgung in den Herbst- und Wintermonaten trägt beispielsweise maßgeblich zu einer funktionsfähigen Immunabwehr bei. Zudem wird es schon seit langem für seine Unterstützung beim Erhalt gesunder Knochen und Zähne sowie der Muskelfunktion geschätzt.
Vitamin D wird vom Körper unter Einwirkung von Sonnenlicht hergestellt. Das "Sonnen-Vitamin" kann vom menschlichen Organismus über die Haut durch direktes Sonnenlicht gebildet werden. In Europa, insbesondere in Mitteleuropa, ist es aufgrund der geografischen Gegebenheiten zwischen Oktober und Februar nicht möglich ausreichend Vitamin D zu bilden. Grund dafür ist der Stand der Sonne – nur wenn diese besonders hoch am Himmel steht, kann die eigene Vitamin-D-Synthese angeregt werden. Jede(r) Zweite ist untervorsorgt. Um einen moderaten Tagesbedarf decken zu können ist zwischen März und September eine Mindestaufenthaltszeit in der Sonne notwendig (zumindest ärmel- und beinlos). Die endogene Synthese wird aber zusätzlich von vielen Faktoren (Hautpigmentierung, Sonnenschutzmittel, Luftverschmutzung etc.) beeinflusst. Zudem nimmt die körpereigene Vitamin-D-Synthese im Alter ab.
Das Vorkommen des fettlösliche Vitamin D in Lebensmitteln ist äußerst begrenzt und unter anderem in Lebensmittel wie Lebertran, Fischen (wie Hering, Aal oder Lachs), Eigelb, Avocado, Milch und Butter enthalten. Vitamin D3 wird im Sinne der orthomolekularen Methoden bei vielen gesundheitlichen Problemen gezielt eingesetzt. Je nach Blutspiegel fällt die Dosierung unterschiedlich hoch aus.
